Safe Haven
December 2018
Our generous visitors helped us raise $778 for Safe Haven.
Of the worlds 3 wombat species, the Northern Hairy-nosed is the most Endangered being classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The IUCN states that there are currently only 115 adult Northern's left in the world and to make matters worse they are all found within a 500 hectare area of a single National Park in central Queensland, the Epping Forest National Park.
One organization trying to prevent the worlds largest burrowing marsupial from becoming extinct is SAFE HAVEN; a non for profit organization in Queensland that currently houses a breeding population of Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats that are being studied to better understand the breeding behaviors and captive management of wombats.
With years of this research now undertaken the next stage is ready to begin.
This very ambitious stage is to bring wild Northern's to SAFE HAVEN in a world first breeding program for the species. The Queensland community have gotten behind the team and the enclosures have been built with many hours of time and materials donated to this great cause but there is still plenty of work to do before the program is fully underway.
