Save the Koala Month - Australian Koala Foundation
September 2016
Our generous visitors helped us raise $415 for Australian Koala Foundation.
According to the AKF, they are “focussed on enacting a Koala Protection Act; a simple piece of national legislation that has been formulated by us, in consultation with our legal teams in Australia and overseas. It will focus on protecting trees. Current legislation ironically focusses on the Koala itself, and the habitat is almost impossible to protect. Did you know that industry can be given permits to 'take'? This means that a company can accidentally kill a Koala during their operations. How can industry be allowed to do this? This would not be allowed in a Koala Protection Act.
The Koala Protection Act will also insist that the Koala should be treated with immense respect. The AKF was successful in arguing that the Koala should be listed as 'vulnerable' and the Federal Government listed the Koala in 2012. Since that time nothing has changed, except the federal laws have been weakened at the behest of industry. It is clear that existing federal legislation is incapable of providing the level of protection needed to save the Koala. The Koala Protection Act is absolutely necessary. Remember - 'No Tree, No Me'.”
